Robert Glasper's Experiment Quartet

Blue note recording artist Robert Glasper is a brilliant pianist whose far-reaching vision spans the gap between hip-hop and jazz. New York Magazine states: "Glasper unfailingly gets the feeling right. His music isx direct, forceful, inventive, and accessible without pandering. " Glasper is a self-professed "musical mutt." His sound is imbued with the Southern gospel sounds he was raised on, informed by his jazz training, and seeped with the Hip-hop sounds of his generation. He has shared the stage with Stevie Wonder, Q-Tip, Mos Def, Erykha Badu and the Roots, but has also toured with jazz giants Christian McBride, Russell Malone Kenny Garrett, Nicholas Payton, Roy Hargrove, Terence Blanchard, and Carmen Lundy. Glasper's music is the face of the future.

Dave Liebman is an honored recipient of the 2011 NEA Jazz Masters Award. Critic Leonard Feather claims that he is "among the most important saxophonists in contemporary music." Dave Liebman has made a unique contribution to the evolution of jazz. He was a member of Miles Davis' electric ensemble and recorded with him on On the Corner, Black Satin, Get Up With It. He toured and recorded with Coltrane's drummer, Elvin Jones, for 11 years. Simply stated, Liebman is one of the most important musicians of his generation and a direct link to jazz's greatest pioneers. Liebman will perform with guitarist Vic Juris, bassist Tony Marino and drummer Marko Marcinko. This tour will celebrate twenty years together, pursuing eclectic projects ranging from jazz standards to Puccini arias. They will be focusing on their newest release "Turnaround, the Music of Ornette Coleman," which received "2010 Record of the Year" from the German Jazz Journalists Association.
This concert is co-sponsored by Ellis Music Company.

Pucho and his Latin Soul Brothers
The true pioneer of Latin Boogaloo. Pucho Brown is a timbalero from Harlem, an old-school troubadour who makes his rounds with a sizzling, eight-piece ensemble. Pucho and his New York-based band were a huge hit in the late '60s, but as popular tastes changed he was forced to disband and eked out the next 19 years playing "society Latin" music in the Catskill Mountains. He might still be touring the borscht belt today if it hadn't been for "acid jazz," a genre of music, established in the UK that fused hip-hop and funk over looped beats generated from groove-masters like Pucho. The Latin Soul Brothers continue to ride their second wave of popularity, applying their rhythmical magic to soul and jazz classics.

VJC Big Band
Since 2004, the Vermont Jazz Center has welcomed the holiday season with a swing dance party featuring our very own, VJC big band. This 17-piece, power-house ensemble is comprised of area professionals who gather to rehearse and perform music from the 1920s to the 21st century. The ensemble features Steve Rice on drums, Steve Sonntag and Charlie Schneeweis on trumpet and Bob Stabach on saxophone. Repertoire includes swinging numbers by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson, Stan Kenton, Benny Goodman and many more. Each year we welcome a guest vocalist (TBA) to join us on some familiar chestnuts. This concert is a gala performance replete with homemade delicacies, beer and wine.
