Gretchen Parlato

When legendary saxophonist, Wayne Shorter heard young singer, Gretchen Parlato, his response was: "There is no one out there like Gretchen." Apparently he's not the only one who feels like this. Herbie Hancock calls this first place winner of the Thelonious Monk Jazz Vocal competition "a singer with a deep, almost magical connection to the music."

Perhaps it's her choice of songs, that range from Monk's "Ugly Beauty" to "Blue in Green," to lost gems from the Bossa Nova and Great American songbooks, perhaps it's her effortless delivery, but Parlato earns praise as easily as zucchinis grow in the rich, sunlit earth: First place with Jazz Journalists Association, Top 10 awards from NPR, Billboard, Downbeat, Village Voice, Boston Globe, sold out shows at the Montreal Jazz Festival...the list goes on!
