Chuchito Valdés Trio

Twice nominated for a Grammy, Chuchito Valdes is the archetypical Cuban pianist demonstrating acumen in rhythm, technique and swing. He approaches the instrument like a congero, with precision and intensity, yet his style is strongly influenced by classical training and years of transcribing the improvised solos of jazz masters.

Born in Havana, Chuchito's pedigree hails from one of Cuba's most distinguished musical families: his father is Cucho Valdes and his grandfather is Bebo Valdes (of the Buena Vista Social Club). Chuchito is a master of Son, Danzon, Cuban Timba and Guaguanco. In concert, his music draws on these Latin styles injected with knowledgeable references to a century of jazz piano - from Jelly Roll Morton to Art Tatum to Oscar Peterson to Keith Jarrett.

Howard Reich of the Chicago Tribune states: "In a sense, Valdes and his band reinvigorated age old Cuban musical forms, the venerable cha-cha-cha and mambo standards revitalized by the muscular virtuosity of a mostly younger generation of players. This was jazz improvisation of the most sophisticated kind..."
