Carl Allen Quintet - The Art of Elvin

"My ultimate goal is to get to the level of [my mentors] Art Blakey, Art Taylor, Elvin Jones, and Billy Higgins ... every time they sit down behind a set of drums, they were swinging...." C.A.

Called "one of the most prominent drummers of the '90s," Carl Allen has laid down the groove for some of the leading titans of jazz. He was music director for Freddie Hubbard and drummer for the touring and recording groups of Jackie McLean, Woody Shaw, Dewey Redman and George Coleman (among many others). Of the numerous lessons taught to Allen by his mentor Art Blakey, there are two that have most clearly shaped his life: First, one can never compromise or "coast" by taking the easy route; and second, "the power of swing is something else and once [you] get to that level, everything else falls into place." Allen epitomizes Blakey's honorable spirit on the bandstand and off. He is clear, generous and devoted to the jazz legacy. He believes in both swinging hard and an egoless submission to the music itself. Perhaps it is this proud bearing of Blakey's mantle that led Peter Watrous of the New York Times to identify Allen's playing as "aggressive without being intrusive."

Carl Allen will be performing with his working quintet including Tivon Pennicott, saxophone; Freddie Hendrix, trumpet; Xavier Davis, piano; Dezron Douglas, bass.
