Chico Freeman Plus-tet

Saxophonist Chico Freeman is one of the major forces to have emerged in jazz. He was born into Chicago's most respected jazz family and was embraced early on as the torch-bearer of that lineage: his father is the legendary Von Freeman, his uncles are George Freeman (guitar) and Bruz Freeman (drums). Many critics have compared Chico Freeman to the greats in jazz history and, like Wynton Marsalis, he was considered one of the "young lions" of the 1980s. But the true testament to Freeman's talent and ability are the recordings he has produced as a leader and the musical relations he has cultivated on the bandstand. Chico Freeman has performed or recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Charles Mingus, Jack DeJohnette, Art Blakey, Wynton Marsalis, Hank Jones, Joe Henderson, Roy Haynes, Earth, Wind and Fire, Michael Jackson and Sting. He has also performed with a who's who of Latin Jazz and Salsa including Tito Puente, Machito, Irakere, Celia Cruz, Giovanni Hidalgo, Eddie Palmieri and El Gran Combo. He will present his Plus-tet at the VJC, a standard jazz quartet plus "exotic percussionist" Reto Weber.
