Words cannot describe the impact NEA Jazz Master Sheila Jordan has had on generations of musicians who have been influenced by her singing, sense of time and commitment to keeping the living history of bebop vibrant. A consumate teacher who seems to fall in love with all her students (and visa versa), Jordan is indeed the "keeper of the bebop flame." She transmits her passion for bebop by introducing the complex melodies of Charlie Parker to anyone who will listen and infusing the music with the intimacy of someone who lived through the era and knew all the musicians involved in its creation. In her concerts Sheila encourages listeners to hear bebop's essence rather than its analytical derivative.
Alan Broadbent is one of Sheila's favorite pianists. He is a sensitive accompanist and brilliant arranger. Together they have worked on numerous projects including her highly regarded Heart Songs, a jazz trio plus string quartet album with arrangements by Broadbent that "realize a lifelong dream" of Jordan's to record with string quartet.
Part of the impetus of scheduling this concert is the release of a 1991 recording of a newly discovered live performance by Sheila Jordan, Alan Broadbent and Harvie S from Kimball's East in Oakland California. The CD, released in 2016, is called Better than Anything and has already received numerous accolades. What better way to celebrate this release than with a concert with the exact same musicians 25 years later!
