Tom Harrell Quartet, October 14th, 2017

Tom Harrell, trumpet; Danny Grissett, piano; Ugonna Okegwo, bass; Joe Dyson, drums

Tom Harrell is one of the most prolific trumpeters in jazz. His career spans more than 40 years and he has appeared on over 260 albums with artists such as Charles McPherson and Horace Silver. Harrell is also one of the most important forces for positivity in jazz and he surrounds himself with loyal friends who share his vision that music is a vehicle for healing, unity and peace. He also is perpetually creative; he composes as part of his daily routine, writing for numerous projects that reflect his desire to create using a broad range of pallets. Drummer and collaborator Johnathan Blake stated "one of the things that my time with Tom has taught me is [the importance of] living in the moment and letting the music play you, as opposed to forcing the music."

Tom Harrell twice earned trumpeter of the year in Down Beat Magazine. He has released 27 albums as a leader and has appeared as a sideman with important figures in jazz history including Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Dizzie Gillespie, Horace Silver, Art Farmer, Phil Woods, Lee Konitz, Sam Jones, Jim Hall, Charlie Haden, Joe Lovano. His performance with pianist Bill Evans (on Evans' last commercial recording) earned the ensemble a Grammy Award for "Best Instrumental Jazz Performance" in 1981. He will be performing at the Vermont Jazz Center with his working quartet promoting their new recording called Moving Pictures.
