Elio Villafranca's Jass Syncopators, November 18th, 2017

Emerging Artist Series
Villafranca, a virtuoso on the piano, is a gifted musician who is able to deftly morph the compelling rhythms of his native Cuba by fusing them with the instrumentation, technique, and theory inherent in jazz and classical music. The concept of his group, The Jass Syncopators, is to re-imagine the effect of Cuban and African contributions on the evolution of jazz in New Orleans. It ties together the rhythms of Congo Square, where slaves of African descent danced and performed on makeshift percussion instruments, with Jelly Roll Morton's famous 1938 quote "if you can't put tinges of Spanish into your tunes you will never be able to get the right seasoning...for jazz." Morton was referring to the direct influence of Cuban culture and music on the emergence of jazz in the beginning of the 20th century. Villafranca's project puts an authentic spin on this project. He was a double major in both percussion and piano performance in Cuba's esteemed Escuela Nacional de Arte. He is also a professor at the Julliard School of Music in New York and has worked as a sideman for Wynton Marsalis, Jon Faddis, Sonny Fortune, Giovanni Hidalgo, Eddie Henderson, Miguel Zenón, Cándido Camero and Johnny Pacheco among others.
