Wycliffe Gordon's International All Stars, January 13th, 2018

When we talk about the trombone in traditional and straight-ahead jazz, we talk about Wycliffe Gordon. The two are inseparable. Gordon's commitment to the music is demonstrated by the plethora of projects he is constantly working on; his latest album is a tribute to Louis Armstrong, and he has recently completed a series of workshops at colleges and festivals, a weeklong stint at the Blue Note with David Sanborn, and a tour to celebrate the centennial anniversaries of Ella, Monk, Mongo and Dizzy.  Also impressive is a recent performance and studio recording of Gordon's full-length soundtrack to a 1920 silent film by African-American director Oscar Micheaux. This landmark film deals directly with the Great Migration, racial relations, the Ku Klux Klan and Jim Crow.

The son of a piano-playing gospel preacher, Gordon came to prominence as an original member of the Wynton Marsalis Septet and has been connected with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra since 1989. He has 20 albums out as a leader and has appeared as a sideman in over 300 recordings including projects with Wynton Marsalis, Winard Harper, Anat Cohen, Sherman Irby, Roswell Rudd, the Herbie Nichols Project, Marcus Roberts, Jimmy Owens, Natalie Merchant, Paul Simon and many others.
