Marquis Hill Blacktet, February 17th, 2018

Thelonious Monk Award Winner and trumpeter Marquis Hill crafts sound to fit his own personal vision of what he wants to hear. Hill's band is the Blacktet: a loyal, working ensemble that gives him the opportunity to write for the precise tone quality produced by each member while simultaneously sculpting a group sound. To Hill, the most important element of this band is its groove: The Blacktet swings super-hard and its grooves use elements of hip hop, hard bop and swing. The ensemble's touch is light and its use of dynamics and space makes the music very easy to listen to. An example of Hill's attention to the nuance of sound is his choice to use a vibraphone rather than a piano as the chordal instrument. He says he "wanted the music to be nice and open and free... and the vibraphone really adds that openness, a dryer sound that doesn't take up as much space." Hill's band presents the new Chicago sound but, even more, he has created something unique, compelling and very fresh. The Blacktet gives us a new paradigm of jazz that will take us into the future.
