Donny McCaslin Quartet featuring Jason Lindner, March 24th, 2018

Donny McCaslin (tenor saxophone), Jason Lindner (keyboards and piano)
Bass and drums TBA

McCaslin and Lindner have been cultivating a sturdy side-plot in the garden of jazz for years. Both musicians have solid roots in the language. They each have earned jazz cred many times over, playing standards and more familiar fare (Lindner was house pianist at Smalls during the mid-90s and McCaslin replaced Michael Brecker in Steps Ahead). But like Miles Davis, neither McCaslin nor Lindner is content to reiterate their past accomplishments. Listeners discover a forward-seeking restlessness permeating their music; non-stop surprises and unexplored textural landscapes emerge from their continual quest to provide soundscapes for the future. A lot of this has to do with the use of retro-analog sounds emitting from Lindner's arsenal of keyboards, but it is also because the band shares a penchant for rhythmically complex, hard-driving melodies that unfold into cathartic climaxes. David Bowie heard the quartet during their residency at the 55 Bar in lower Manhattan (along with electric bassist Tim Lefebvre and drummer Mark Guiliana) and decided to use them as the core of his ensemble for his final record Blackstar. Thanks to their glorious collaboration with Bowie on his swansong, this band has been propelled into the public eye and supported by those enamored with their indefinable sound.

"The group has a bedrock relationship with groove, but also a genius for permutation" -- Nate Chinen, New York Times
