Improvisation and Rhythm - Teaching to the Standards

This workshop shows middle through high school teachers how to accomplish Vermont and National Standards in Improvisation and Rhythm. Teachers of earlier grade levels are also welcome. The course offers creative hands-on approaches for any instrument (including voice) from two veteran teachers.

Focus of the Program

We focus especially on jazz and world music applications, but these methods are applicable to any style of music. Participants learn new ideas for teaching and develop their own skills and abilities in improvisation and rhythm. Participants should bring their instruments.


This program will also include an evening jam session and discussion on the importance of music education with world-renowned trumpeter, Ray Vega.

Topics

  • Rhythm: Rhythmic accuracy and flexibility, rhythmic concepts from world music, developing melody from rhythm, rhythmic improvisation.
  • Improvisation: Different methods of improvisation: vertical, horizontal, melodic. Motivic development. Nomenclature. Ear Training. Methods for instructing basic harmony.
  • Teaching strategies in both rhythmic and melodic concepts and improvisation.

Tuition

This workshop is two days and one night.

Overnight Participant:
Includes 3 meals a day & sleeping accommodations.
